Mikey Moon's health and fitness column: Don't wait until New Year

Happy New Year! This week marks the beginning of 2021 and the start of your New Year’s resolution.

Like most people your resolution is probably to get a little fitter and to maybe lose those Christmas pounds.

I am here today to make sure that you don’t fall into the January trap.

Did you ever wonder why most people are unable to stick to the New Year’s resolutions that they set?

It is because they don’t set realistic action steps in order to make sure that they can achieve the goals they set.

Fitness is a great example because it is normally number one on people’s list but the urge to go 100mph needs to be fought in this case.

It is going to be extremely hard to go from very little exercise and poor nutrition to exercising five or six times a week with a super clean diet.

I always call this reverse cold turkey, so if you were to give up smoking and just stopped, it would be much harder to stick to than setting reasonable action steps.

The same can be said about fitness but in the other way. To go from 0-100 immediately will make it really hard to stick to.

Focusing on small action steps such as working out three times a week is much easier to do and more likely to be achieved.

Don’t focus too much on the end goal and focus more on improving each day.
