Blackpool 1 Mansfield Town 4: Seasiders shoot themselves in the foot with some desperate defending

Blackpool’s players were well beaten by their visitors to Bloomfield Road.

Defensive deficiencies cost Blackpool dearly as they were comfortably beaten at a wet and windy Bloomfield Road on Saturday.

The Seasiders were unable to follow up Tuesday’s home win over MK Dons as Michael Smith, Rhys Oates, Ilmari Niskanen’s own goal and Tyler Roberts extended Mansfield Town’s unbeaten League One run to six games.

Dion Charles’ second goal of the season, moments after Bailey Peacock-Farrell had made a stunning save from Smith’s penalty, had put Ian Evatt’s players on terms with half-time approaching.

However, they were made to pay the price as some awful defending gifted Mansfield two of their three second-half goals.

Evatt had made three changes from the team which returned to winning ways on Tuesday.

As anticipated, George Honeyman’s calf injury opened the door for Leighton Clarkson after his appearance off the bench in midweek.

The other changes came up front, where Dale Taylor was given a first start of the season alongside Charles as Jerry Yates and Tom Bloxham dropped to the bench.

Evatt’s players began brightly, in contrast to the heavy rain and strong winds on the Fylde coast, pressing their visitors and with their midfielders keen to get forward.

Albie Morgan curled an early free-kick off target before Karoy Anderson spurned a presentable chance to break the deadlock on nine minutes.

Morgan’s diagonal ball found him inside the area but a sidefooted volley drifted well wide of goal.

Zac Ashworth also fired wide before Smith put the visitors in front, finishing calmly as Blackpool failed to deal with a cross from the left.

Niskanen was acrobatically thwarted by Mansfield keeper Liam Roberts, but it was the visitors who looked the likelier to score again.

Louis Reed shot wide and saw an effort blocked by Niskanen before an eventful couple of minutes could have seen Blackpool two down before getting back on terms.

George Abbott hit the floor under pressure from Niskanen inside Blackpool’s area and Reed’s follow-up was blocked, only for referee Ollie Yates to award a penalty for the initial challenge on Abbott.

With everyone of a Tangerine persuasion incensed, Peacock-Farrell turned Smith’s penalty over the bar and into the Blackpool fans behind his goal.

Those supporters had something else to celebrate moments later when Clarkson’s ball in behind found Charles and he held off his marker to fire home.

Having introduced Jordan Bowery and Oates at the break, Mansfield began the second half busily with Jon Russell off target inside 13 seconds.

Clarkson saw a free-kick comfortably held before Blackpool shot themselves in the foot when falling behind again on 55 minutes.

Jordan Williams gave away possession to Abbott, who played in Oates to fire beyond Peacock-Farrell.

Another visiting substitute, Regan Hendry, fired narrowly wide on the hour before the Seasiders went further behind four minutes later.

Clarkson played a cross back towards his own goal, Peacock-Farrell diverted it away, the ball was played back in and Niskanen turned it into his own net.

That was the cue for Evatt to make changes, with Yates and Bloxham replacing Taylor and Charles in a like-for-like swap up front.

Chances were at a premium for Blackpool, however, Clarkson seeing a header clawed away by the keeper.

They were given a lesson in finishing 12 minutes from time when Mansfield broke and Tyler Roberts cut in from the right before beating Peacock-Farrell in emphatic fashion.

That was that as the boos from Blackpool’s fans at full-time left everyone in no doubt as to their view on a second-half showing as miserable as the increasingly torrential conditions.
