“It’s been a good start”: AFC Fylde boss is delighted at the way his players have begun the season
AFC Fylde head coach has praised his squad’s mindset ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup tie.
Craig Mahon reiterated that AFC Fylde will remain grounded as their attention turns from the National League to the FA Cup this weekend.
The Coasters head to Harrogate Town in the first round on Saturday, looking to repeat their National League win there in September.
They do so on the back of 3-1 victories at Mill Farm against Hartlepool United and Hornchurch over the past week, which have lifted them to fourth in the table.
Harrogate, meanwhile, are three points clear of Fylde in second, having drawn at Forest Green Rovers on Saturday after losing at nine-man Carlisle United last Wednesday.
The Coasters won their qualifier 5-0 against Atherton Collieries to reach this stage of the Cup and head coach Mahon told club media: “The lads are in a good mindset at the moment.
“We don’t get too high with the highs or too low with the lows when we lose.
“We stay focused, we stay humble and we always focus on the next game.”
Fylde’s latest two wins were achieved after falling behind early on.
Angelo Balanta fired Hornchurch ahead but two goals from Millar Matthews-Lewis put the Coasters in front by half-time.
Jack Morris then wrapped up three points with their third goal on 72 minutes as Mahon’s players secured a fourth consecutive victory at home in all competitions.
Matthews-Lewis and Morris also scored against Hartlepool and Mahon said of the two victories: “I can’t ask for much more than that from this group of lads.
“It’s been a good start. We’re enjoying our football and you can see the lads are playing with a smile on their face.
“It’s important for us to keep this home record and keep winning at home because this stands you in good stead come the end of the season.
“All that credit goes to the lads, I thought they were fantastic – their attitude, commitment, sticking to the shape and the patterns, it was really good.
“The way we play is expansive. We take risks and we try things.
“It gives us a bit of a challenge to come back from a goal down but I trust these lads.
"I trust how we play, I trust in them as people, as players, and I know we’re going to create chances.
“With the quality that we have on the wings, up front and in midfield, we always feel like we’re close to getting a goal.
“I’m really happy that we have the mindset, the attitude, to come back from that (conceding early) because that takes a lot, going a goal down when you’re playing well.
“I’m absolutely delighted that we were able to come away with three points.”
