'£100 worth of food gone'- Fylde coast residents horror after40-hour power cut

Some residents in Wyre were left without power for over 40 hours after a tree damaged overhead wiring in the middle of Storm Boelo.

Residents in and around Sandy Lane, in Out Rawcliffe, were left in the dark from around 8pm on Sunday evening until 1.30pm on Tuesday afternoon.

The damage was caused by a tree branch which was blown into an overhead wire by the dangerously-high winds of Storm Boelo.

Electricity North West kept residents updated on the progress of the works, but the complexity of the fix meant that works could not be completed to the initial deadline.

Residents across Wyre have described having to throw away the ‘entire contents’ of their fridges, with one woman saying that she had lost ‘well over a hundred pounds worth’ of food.

Local businesses were also affected by the outage. Steve Houghton, tollkeeper at Cartford Bridge, said he was forced to close his business early to protect staff after deeming the lack of floodlighting a safety risk.

Power has now been restored in Out Rawcliffe and neighbouring Pilling, but hundreds of residents across Wyre and the Fylde coast remain in the dark. A spokesperson for Electricity Northwest said that they continued to make ‘good progress’ towards restoring power for all properties, adding that they were providing free welfare and support to customers who were affected.
