Fylde RFC 50 Heath 13: Eight tries see Fylde secure the spoils at the Woodlands
Fylde return from their National Two North break and secure victory on Saturday.
Eight tries to one gave Fylde RFC a 50-13 victory in their National Two North match against Heath at the Woodlands on Saturday, writes ANGUS SLATER.
The first meeting between the two clubs saw the return of Fylde captain Toby Harrison, who had been out with injury since February.
It was also his 100th first XV appearance for Fylde in a game which could have gone either way after a close first half.
Fylde took the lead six minutes in when they won a scrum penalty just outside the 22 and a superb kick gave them a lineout five metres out.
A clean routine and strong drive were enough for them to score through James Sutcliffe, though a missed conversion meant they led 5-0.
Heath then conceded a penalty, enabling Fylde to kick to the corner for a five-metre lineout.
Although Heath halted the resulting maul, Fylde regathered with Aaron Pope’s quick feet and long reach giving them a second try.
Dan Slawson’s conversion made it 12-0 after 20 minutes, though Heath responded two minutes later.
They worked the ball wide to winger Callum Harriet-Brown, whose fancy footwork beat the Fylde defence as he dived over and Chris Johnson converted.
Fylde were reduced to 14 men when Matt Garrod was yellow-carded on 26 minutes before tempers boiled over a couple of minutes later.
A scuffle near the Fylde line saw Mike Walton and Heath’s Tom Stansfield receive yellows, after which Johnson landed a penalty to leave Heath 12-10 behind.
Despite being a man down, Fylde looked to close out the first half strongly in winning a penalty and gaining another five-metre lineout.
The set piece ended with Sutcliffe scoring his second try, though Slawson was again unable to convert it as Fylde led 17-10 at half-time.
Heath started the second half strongly, winning a penalty almost immediately which Johnson sent through the posts.
Fylde then won a penalty from the restart, kicking to the corner before the ensuing lineout led to a further penalty.
Slawson unsuccessfully sought to find Owain Williams with a crossfield kick before play was brought back and another penalty saw Heath’s Josh Buller yellow-carded.
Fylde made Heath pay for their lack of discipline, mauling another try on 47 minutes through Rob Williamson and Slawson converting.
They crossed again with 20 minutes left when Mike Walton was brought down metres short, but Pope went over for his second try and another conversion made it 31-13.
A minute later, the ball was worked wide with Ben Turner and Gabe Maguire combining for Williams to mark his debut with the try of the day as Slawson again converted.
Further penalties gave Fylde another five-metre lineout, which ended with another Williamson try and Slawson conversion with five minutes left.
The scoring didn’t stop there as, in the final moments, another maul was driven over as Williamson completed a second-half hat-trick and sealed an excellent day for Fylde.
