Huddersfield 40 Fylde RFC 24: Fylde head into the break on the back of another defeat
Fylde RFC suffered another defeat in National Two North on Saturday.
Fylde RFC’s difficult start to the National Two North season continued with Saturday’s 40-24 defeat at Huddersfield.
Still struggling to select from a stable squad of available first choice players, Fylde were well in the game until the interval at 21-17 down.
However, two early tries in Huddersfield’s buoyant second-half display effectively wrestled away the game from the visitors.
The first half opened with Fylde forced back in their own half from the kick-off and, having won a lineout, they sought to run their way downfield.
Instead, a pass was intercepted and Huddersfield’s hooker Liam Stapley was the beneficiary for a third-minute try converted by Will Milner.
In the ninth minute, the visiting backs moved wide left and then right for Ben Turner to continue his productive season by scoring near the corner.
Danny Cassidy kicked a fine conversion from near the touchline and the teams were level at 7-7.
Errors then crept into Fylde’s play, starting with the spilling Milner’s restart before Huddersfield retook the lead on 13 minutes.
A scrum ended with them breaking through the visitors’ defence, Tom Hainsworth scoring and Milner converting.
Leading 14-7, they quickly scored again as Gareth Widdop forced his way over in the 22nd minute as Milner once again converted.
Fylde responded by earning more territory and possession, setting up a powerful forward maul which was brought down illegally.
Having been adjudged as the offender, Lewis Bradley was sinbinned and Fylde had the man advantage.
They drove once more from the subsequent lineout and James Sutcliffe for a try which left them trailing 21-12.
They continued their pressure on the Huddersfield defence as half-time approached, setting up another driving maul 15 metres out on 34 minutes.
Sutcliffe claimed his second try of the game and fifth of the season as half-time came with them 21-17 in arrears.
The first 10 minutes of the second half were crucial in determining the game’s outcome.
A decision against the visitors on 44 minutes led to a kick to the corner and a lineout near the Fylde line.
Huddersfield’s drive was initially repelled but they moved the ball along their backline and Will Brough touched down, Milner converting for a 28-17 lead.
A few minutes later, Charlie Foreman scored out wide to make it 33-17.
A second Huddersfield yellow card when Saif Boussaada was sent to the sinbin for pulling down a maul didn’t have any significant impact as Fylde were unable to take advantage.
No sooner had Boussaada returned to the action from the sinbin than Jack Bailey suffered the same fate in the 70th minute.
This time, Fylde did exploit the extra man when Rob King touched down and Cassidy converted to make it 33-24.
Late on, Fylde were defending their line in any way possible which saw Charlie Partington sinbinned.
It was Huddersfield’s turn to drive towards the line, where the maul collapsed and a penalty try was awarded.
There was still time for Cassidy to receive a yellow as Fylde dropped to 11th place in the table.
