Fylde RFC will encounter a familiar face on their return to National Two North matters

Fylde RFC return to National Two North matters after the first break of the season.

Latest signing Cam Brown could come into the Fylde RFC side that returns to action at home to Heath this Saturday (3pm).

Centre Brown was a member of Caldy’s Championship squad last season and was selected for England Counties North Division Under-20s.

He was also a member of Lancashire’s County Championship-winning U20s squad last year..

Fylde’s joint-head coach Chris Briers told The Gazette: “Cam will be in and around the squad but whether he comes straight in on Saturday is a decision to be made.

“He hasn’t got the game time he wanted at Caldy and has been on our radar for a while.

“He’s another exciting young talent who is local and knows a lot of our players, so hopefully he can fit in comfortably.”

While exciting new additions are always welcome, it’s perhaps consistency of selection that Fylde have been crying out for during their troubled start to the National Two North season.

“It has been difficult,” Briers added.

“We’ve used 37 players already. That number is okay at the end of the season but not after seven games.

“We do have players gradually coming back and we’re expecting a handful to be available all at once, which will be great because that will give us the tough selection calls we want.”

‘Consistency’ has been the key word in training over the fortnight since Fylde last played.

Briers added: “It’s a case of being consistent in the good things we do, that’s the main message.

“We have done some really good things and scored some tries that make the game look easy, but sometimes we’re nowhere near.

“When you’ve lost your last game, you want to play again as soon as you can but the break has probably been good for us to refresh.”

It’s a chance to draw a line under a three-game losing run, Fylde having conceded at least 40 points in each.

A block of four games before the next break includes visits to unbeaten leaders Sedgley Park and Harrogate before bottom club Wharfedale arrive at the Woodlands.

First up it’s Heath, the National League newcomers making their first visit to Fylde.

Both clubs have two wins from their opening seven and the Halifax team’s player-coach is former Fylde fly-half Chris Johnson.

Briers said: “Heath have exciting players, with Chris running around controlling things.

“I’m sure he’ll be as vocal as ever and they are a team we can’t take lightly.”
