Former Blackpool forward Brian Peterson passes away in native South Africa, aged 83

Ex-Blackpool footballer Brian Peterson has passed away at the age of 83, the club’s Former Players’ Association has announced.

The forward, who played for the Seasiders between 1956 and 1962, sadly passed away in his native South Africa at the start of the week.

He made 103 appearances for Blackpool during his six-year stay at Bloomfield Road, scoring 16 times.

“Sad news to report that former Pool inside-forward/winger Brian Peterson passed away in his native South Africa on Monday, September 21, aged 83,” Blackpool’s Former Players’ Association wrote on Twitter.

“Brian last visited Blackpool for his 70th birthday.

“Sincere condolences to Brian's wife June and family.”

Peterson signed for Joe Smith's Blackpool from South African club Berea Park in 1956, making his debut in a 1-0 win against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

In his final season with the club, he helped the Seasiders reach the semi-finals of the League Cup, where they were knocked out by Norwich City over two legs.

Peterson returned to South Africa in 1962, playing for Durban United, Durban City and Durban Spurs United before retiring in 1970.
