Former Blackpool forward takes temporary charge of Preston North End following sacking of ex-Sheffield United figure

Blackpool’s biggest rivals have made an early season managerial change.

Former Blackpool forward Jason Euell has taken temporary charge of Preston North End following a tough start to the season at Deepdale.

The Lilywhites have picked up just three points from their opening seven league games this term, and find themselves sat 23rd in the Championship table - with only Burnley below them.

A 1-0 home defeat to newly-promoted Lincoln City on Saturday afternoon prompted the sacking of ex-Barnsley and Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom.

The 49-year-old had been in the role for just over two years, having replaced Ryan Lowe back in August 2024.

Heckingbottom’s assistant Stuart McCall, who was part of Neil Critchley’s Seasiders backroom for a brief period back in 2021, has also parted ways with Preston, but first team-coach Euell has remained.

The 49-year-old has been placed in interim charge ahead of a game away to QPR at Loftus Road next weekend.

During his playing career, the retired forward represented the likes of Wimbledon, Charlton Athletic and Blackpool.

It was while with the latter that Euell tasted promotion to the Premier League, forming part of Ian Holloway’s Championship Play-off-winning squad in 2010.

Across a two-year spell in Tangerine, he was on hand with four goals and one assist in 39 appearances.
