Conor McGrandles, who played under new Pool boss Michael Appleton at Sincil Bank, has signed on a free transfer for League One side Charlton Athletic, penning a three-year deal.

It comes after the 26-year-old rejected the offer of a new contract with the Imps.

The Gazette understands the central midfielder’s name had been mentioned at Bloomfield Road, although it’s not known whether an offer was ever lodged.

“The midfielder has been attracting interest from Championship and League One clubs”, the Addicks said in a statement confirming the signing.

“I’m really pleased we’ve been able to sign Conor,” owner Thomas Sandgaard added.

“He was highly sought after as he is an excellent midfielder at this level and will continue to grow during his time with us.

“We want to control the midfield next season and adding Conor to the players we already have gives us a great opportunity to do that.”

McGrandles was part of Appleton’s Lincoln side that reached the play-off final during the 2020/21 season, where they lost 2-1 to Blackpool.

The Seasiders are looking to strengthen in that area of the pitch for the third window running, having missed out on other targets - namely Cameron Brannagan and Oliver Norwood - on previous occasions.

While Pool do have numbers in midfield, Kevin Stewart is unfortunately injury-prone and Matty Virtue and Sonny Carey are still working their way back from long-term injuries.

Grant Ward, while still training with the club, was released at the end of last season alongside Ethan Robson, another midfielder.

Elsewhere, Kenny Dougall is still on the books while Callum Connolly and Reece James are two versatile defensive-minded players who can also fill in as and when required

Anthony Hartigan, meanwhile, is another name that has been linked with a move ahead of his imminent departure from AFC Wimbledon, where he’s turned down a new deal.
