Blackpool Netball Club round-up: Encouraging weekend performances provide plenty of promise
The round-up from last weekend’s matches involving Blackpool Netball Club’s various teams.
Blackpool Netball Club’s North West Regional Division One team produced a much-improved performance at YWCA Bury - but were unable to prevent the hosts from claiming a 64-52 victory last weekend.
Determined to respond after a difficult result the previous weekend, Blackpool began with greater confidence and composure.
A competitive opening quarter saw both sides battle hard for possession, although Bury edged ahead 18-14.
Blackpool found their rhythm in the second quarter and translated their work in training into an assured display.
They won the period 11-10 in reducing the deficit to three goals at half-time as Bury led 28-25.
The contest remained close in the third quarter as Blackpool continued to show determination.
Bury retained a narrow advantage though and were five in front at 43-38 with one period remaining.
That saw Bury pull clear to win by 12, though the final score did not fully reflect Blackpool’s resilient performance as they demonstrated energy, composure and clear signs of progress.
In North West Regional Division Three, Blackpool were beaten 59-44 by a young, well-drilled Oldham side despite a determined second-half display.
The teams were level at 15-15 after a closely-contested opening quarter, with little separating them.
Oldham then made effective changes and imposed their game plan in the second period, while an injury to target shooter Phoebe Thorpe forced Blackpool to reorganise their attack.
Blackpool emerged from half-time with renewed intensity and made the second half a more even contest.
However, the deficit proved too large to overturn and Oldham held on for victory.
Despite the result, Blackpool could take encouragement from their response after the interval and the determination shown throughout the match.
Blackpool’s National Premier League fixture against Nottingham-based Charnwood was postponed after adverse weather prevented the visitors from travelling.
This weekend sees them make their first trip to Jersey for a match with newly-promoted Evelyn Partners Jets, led by player-coach and former England captain Serena Guthrie MBE.
The Division Five squad head to Wilmslow on Saturday, while the Division One team hosts Manchester-based Dominoes at Palatine Leisure Centre (10.30am).
