Blackpool FC Community Trust column: Looking back on a busy month’s work in October

Blackpool FC Community Trust’s latest weekly column for the Gazette.

It has been another busy month for Blackpool FC Community Trust (BFCCT), with a wide range of activities, events and initiatives across our community.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we have shown our support in several ways.

We hosted our ‘Check Your Pumpkins for Lumpkins’ event, inviting members of our community to join us for an evening of pumpkin decorating, learning about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and raising vital funds for our Cancer Prehab and Rehab Programme.

Our Health and Wellbeing Team Leader, Kim Veasey, showed her support by taking part in Breast Cancer Now’s ‘Wear It Pink’ campaign, delivering fitness sessions in pink all week.

Blackpool FC also released a special pink retro shirt in support of - and to raise vital funds for - our Cancer Prehab and Rehab Programme.

We held our annual Show Racism the Red Card event at Bloomfield Road, focusing on themes of discrimination, allyship and online misinformation.

Blackpool FC first-team players and scholars joined us to share their stories and personal experiences around these important topics.

Earlier in the month, our SEND Physical Education Team Leader, Paul Mullin, delivered a session to our second-year degree students and first-year Level 3 Sports students at Blackpool FC Sports College.

It gave students an insight into how to make sessions more inclusive and accessible for all participants.

We celebrated our first player of the month for the academic year at Blackpool FC Sports College, recognising the achievements and commitment of one of our students on the pitch.

Our BFC School students visited the ‘Blue Shoe’ exhibition in Preston.

The informative trip explored the signs and consequences of domestic abuse, helping students to develop their understanding of this important issue.

Our annual Fit2Glow heats took place at three different locations in Blackpool, with 198 year two pupils taking part in glow-in-the-dark football.

The pupils competed for their chance to reach the final at the iconic Tower Circus, combining physical activity with plenty of fun.

We also held a Fit2Go assembly with a twist at Anchorsholme Academy, inviting parents to get involved in physical activity alongside their children.

The interactive and informative assembly encouraged families to get active together.

We celebrated World Mental Health Day as Active Minds football participants took part in an in-house game to show their support.

The session brought together participants through football while highlighting the positive impact that sport and physical activity can have on mental wellbeing.

We remembered and honoured those who have served at our annual Remembrance fixture when the Seasiders played Mansfield Town, coming together to remember and honour those who have served and sacrificed.

Throughout the month, we also delivered our October half-term sports camps, giving children and young people the opportunity to stay active, develop their skills and have fun during the school holidays.

It has been another action-packed month for BFCCT and we’re incredibly proud of everything our teams, participants, partners and wider community have achieved throughout October.
