Ian Evatt: Blackpool have been 'almost trying to score the perfect goal'

Blackpool boss wants his squad to take heart from midfielder’s long-range strike in midweek.

Ian Evatt hopes Jordan Brown’s midweek goal encourages Blackpool’s players to chance their arm from distance more often.

The midfielder scored his second goal of the season with the decisive strike in the Seasiders’ 3-2 win over Aston Villa’s U21s in the Jersey Mike’s Trophy.

With 11 minutes of normal time remaining and Blackpool leading 2-1, Brown hammered a 20-yard shot past Villa keeper James Wright via the underside of the bar.

The Bloomfield Road boss said: “He can do that, I just wish we’d shoot more from the edge of the box because we get ourselves in some great positions.

“We’re almost trying to score the perfect goal but it’s great that Browny’s bought a ticket - so to speak - and it’s a wonderful finish.”

Blackpool’s performance had perhaps been crying out for someone to have tried their luck from distance earlier.

Wright had denied Dion Charles and made two saves from Finley Munroe inside the opening six minutes on the Fylde coast.

After that, although the Seasiders enjoyed the bulk of possession in both halves, they found it difficult to play their way through a packed Villa defence.

Asked if Blackpool had tried to overplay in the first half rather than be a bit more direct, Evatt said: “It’s hard to be direct from back to front because they’re in a block, so they’re set up for that.

“We have to work our way up but once we are in and around the box, as a coach, I’ve always said to the players that the framework we set them out in and some of our patterns of play will get you to the final third - but then that’s where you need some magic, you need some chaos, you need some creativity.

“We’ll get you there as coaches but then it’s down to you guys to finish it off for us.

“Too often we try and make the extra pass or try and score the perfect goal, rather than sometimes taking the shot on or crossing from a deeper position.

“These are things that we’re trying to work with the players on, on a daily basis.

“We know we’re not where we want to be but we’re going to continue to work hard until that happens.”
