Here's why Blackpool Tower Dungeon could be a frightfully fun place to visit with history fans this half term

I don’t quite know what I expected but I was blown away by the talents of the actors and the amazing special effects.

If you’re looking for interesting places to keep your teens entertained this half term - then I have the perfect place for you.

Last weekend I visited The Blackpool Tower Dungeon for the first time and was amazed at the attraction’s unique blend of live actor performances, immersive storytelling and special effects.

Since opening its doors in 2011, the Tower Dungeon has entertained thousands of guests by transporting them through Lancashire's murky past, encountering notorious characters, chilling tales and jump scares along the way.

The immersive, walk-through attraction inside the Blackpool Tower, offers a 60-minute live-action experience through 1,000 years of Lancashire's dark history, filled with theatrical actors, scary scenes, special effects, and a thrilling drop ride.

I don’t quite know what I expected but I was blown away (and a little scared) by the talents of the actors and the amazing special effects.

As you descend into the heart of the Dungeon in a medieval lift you meet The Lift Jester. As you hear the grinding cogs and chains as the winches strain The Lift Jester bursts into the dark room and you instantly know you are in for the experience of a lifetime.

If the Dungeon was a movie, Descent would be the title sequence. The Lift Jester shares the rules of the Dungeon before leading you to the Dark Chapel.

As you step into the eerie darkness a sense of anticipation is palpable as you learn about Lytham Priory.

Hear the monk tell tales of the history of the Fylde coast, from Viking invasions to the War of the Roses to the new arrival of a new enemy that knows no fear and gives no mercy.

The monks are terrified of this new enemy sent to the Pool that is Black as the wrath of God!

History fans can lap up facts from Lancashire in the Dark ages and hear how the Great Plague spread across this land.

And as the monks believe visitors to the Tower Dungeon are carriers of this deadly disease they will offer no sanctuary in their holy chapel forcing you to move on and see The Plague Doctor.

In the next room you are welcomed onto Plague Street in 1349. In this gloomy alley you have to keep your eye out for signs of the Black Death as red crosses mark the doors of rotting bodies and black rats.

As you take a breath and prepare to move on you come face to face with The Torturer of Lancaster Castle and he is looking for 'volunteers'.

This has got to be the show highlight - delighting and repulsing in equal measure as he shows you around the Torture chamber.

Famously, The Killers filmed their music video 'Here with me' directed by Tim Burton in this room.

And just when you think you’re not sure if your heart can take any more - you moved to meet another terrifying character from Lancashire’s past.

In the next room you meet Judge Blackheart who has little time for excuses. He outlines the new laws added by Oliver Cromwell’s government and as I look around I can see all visitors look guilty.

And then the worst happened, he committed us all to the labyrinth of the lost souls and we had to find a way to escape.

The Labyrinth is a confusing maze of narrow streets and to make it worse your told the storm is coming. This is exhilarating but one not for the fainted hearted.

Another stand out moment is entering the eerie woods of Pendle, where reports of witchcraft are rife - and anyone can be accused, even you...

Here you hear the story of Alizon Device one of Pendle's witches, who was hung for her crime.

And for the big finale is the chance to try the Drop Dead Drop Ride.

Here visitors pay for their crimes. After being judged and sentenced in Lancaster Gaol, visitors must accept the consequences of their crimes. We were all guilty of witchcraft and sentenced to hang - with no right of appeal.

The thrilling faster than gravity drop is meant to recreate what it might have felt like to be hung as a witch. It is truly terrifying.
