Lisa Allison, from Broughton, Lancashire, is one of those already making a difference. She is currently raising Topper, a nine-month-old trainee guide dog, and is encouraging others to step forward and get involved.
Puppy raisers play a crucial role in a guide dog’s early development, welcoming them into their homes and introducing them to everyday environments, people and experiences.
The aim is to help the puppies grow into confident, well-adjusted dogs ready to begin formal training.

Topper’s days are filled with play, treats and plenty of affection, alongside structured exposure to the wider world - all essential preparation for his future role supporting someone with sight loss.
Lisa described the experience as hugely rewarding. She said: "It's so rewarding when they go off to their new home. Of course there are the challenges you'd expect with a young puppy, but you will have a mentor to help you through any issues."

Lisa, who is also a mentor for many puppy raisers in the North West, says that people from all walks of life are welcome to volunteer. "If you live in a flat, have children, other pets, if you work, we need volunteers from diverse homes because we don't know where that guide dog will eventually be placed. It can also be a really good way of having a dog in your life if you are worried about the cost, as Guide Dogs charity will fund their food and vet bills while you care for them."
All food and veterinary costs are covered by the charity, making it an accessible way for people to have a dog while making a lasting impact.
