Major Wyre Council update on floodgates amid Storm Boelo 'threat to life' warning for Fylde coast

The Met Office has issued a yellow wind warning in connection with Storm Austen, as well as a separate yellow wind warning for Storm Boelo.

Flood gates at Cleveleys, Fleetwood and Knott End have been closed as of Friday morning as a precaution against potential flooding and airborne debris caused by strong winds associated with Storms Austen and Boelo.

Wyre Council said the gates would remain closed over the weekend, with reopening expected early next week depending on wind conditions. The council also explained that tides were forecast to remain high and officers would continue to monitor the situation closely.

Residents and visitors have been urged to take care along beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads, where large waves and sea spray could pose a danger.

Wyre Council said the decision to close the flood gates was a precautionary measure in response to the forecast conditions.

The gates are expected to reopen early next week, although this will depend on conditions at the time.
