Forecasters also said other things to expect include: some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, could happen; road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible; some roads and bridges may close; power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage and injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.

Storm Boelo is expected to hit Blackpool and the Fylde coast between 6pm on Saturday evening and 9pm on Sunday. The warning also covers the whole of Lancashire.

Issuing a yellow weather warning for the Fylde coast, a Met Office spokesman said: “Strong westerly winds will spread across northern parts of the UK including Blackpool during Saturday evening.

“Very windy conditions will persist overnight and through much of Sunday before gradually easing from the southwest later.

“Gusts of 55-65 mph are likely widely with some coastal or exposed areas potentially seeing gusts of 70-80 mph or more. Strong winds will be combined with spells of heavy rain, these most frequent over western Scotland.”
