Blackpool's League One rivals make brutal decision just five games into new season - with ex-Swansea City man dismissed

Michael Duff has become the first League One manager to be sacked this season.

Blackpool’s League One rivals Wycombe Wanderers have parted ways with their manager Michael Duff just five games into the new campaign.

The Chairboys have experienced a winless start to the season, just three points on the board so far.

Out of their three draws, the first came away to the Seasiders on the opening day, with Fred Onyedinma’s early header being cancelled out by a debut goal by Finley Munroe off the bench as proceedings ended 1-1 at Bloomfield Road.

Their first home game ended in the same scoreline against Plymouth Argyle, before suffering a heavy 5-1 defeat to Stockport County at Edgeley Park.

That was then followed by a 2-1 loss away to Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

In what proved to be Duff’s final game as manager, Wycombe squandered a two-goal lead, before having to come from behind in a 3-3 draw, in a 3-3 draw with MK Dons on Saturday afternoon.

That result left the Buckinghamshire outfit 23rd in the League One table, with only Wigan Athletic below them.

Duff, who has previously managed the likes of Cheltenham Town and Swansea City, arrived at Adams Park last September following the sacking of Mike Dodds.

The 48-year-old ultimately guided the Chairboys to an 11th place finish last term - picking up 63 points in total, which was 11 off a spot in the play-offs.

In a statement explaining the decision to part ways with Duff and his assistant Alex Morris, Wycombe wrote: “The club has made the decision in light of a disappointing run of results since the spring and believes the time is right to take a new direction.

“Everyone at the club would like to thank Michael and Alex for their hard work and contributions to Wycombe Wanderers and wish them every success for the future.

“The appointment of an interim head coach will follow later today.”
