Blackpool boss benefited from having more options available in MK Dons victory

Ian Evatt reflected after Blackpool earned a much-needed three points on Tuesday evening.

Ian Evatt felt his Blackpool players were worthy winners after they defeated MK Dons at Bloomfield Road on Tuesday.

Second-half goals from Karoy Anderson and Dale Taylor secured a 2-0 win, the Seasiders’ first League One victory since beating Peterborough United at the end of August.

It was a performance of two halves with a scrappy opening 45 minutes which saw Evatt’s players dealing with the Dons’ direct approach.

In contrast, the second half was much more pleasing on the eye as half-time substitute Leighton Clarkson got on the ball, while Ilmari Niskanen and Josh Bowler were constant threats out wide.

Evatt said afterwards: “First half, we stood up to all the physicality.

“They’re a really physical team, they’ve had huge investment, they’ve got a really good squad of players.

“They have a system and a way of playing which asks you a lot of questions.

“That’s been our Kryptonite at times, dealing with that type of football.

“I thought we stood up to it but we forgot to show our personality. I think that was just down to nervousness, I think it was down to over-caring.

“They care about this club, they care about the results, they care about me and the staff, and I think that made them nervous.

“I reminded them at half-time that to win this game, we have to do all the things we did defensively in the first half but we have to be us with the ball; we have to have more personality and show some more belief.

“We did that second half, the subs really helped us as well. I thought, second half, we deserved to win the game, it was much more like it.”

The second half proved a tale of two substitutes, with Clarkson impressing after the half-time withdrawal of George Honeyman with a calf issue.

Taylor also came on midway through the half and got the crucial second goal within 10 minutes of his arrival.

Evatt added: “When we’ve got availability in the squad, which we’ve not really had in the year I’ve been in charge, it helps us to change games and impact things from the bench.

“Very rarely have I had that opportunity and it’s great to have it. We’ve got one or two things that’s happened tonight with Karoy, possibly, and possibly George.

“We don’t know, we’ll just have to deal with that, but Leighton coming on at half-time gave us some composure and calmness.

“I thought the two strikers (Taylor and Dion Charles) that came on were just menaces; just didn’t stop, didn’t give their defenders a minute.

“When we’ve got everyone available, those four strikers (Taylor, Charles, Jerry Yates and Tom Bloxham) and Niall (Ennis) are five top strikers for this level and it’s great to be able to mix and match.”
