Norton & Stockton Ancients 2 AFC Fylde Women 0: Rare defeat sees Coasters beaten in FA Cup first round

AFC Fylde Women suffered FA Cup defeat last Sunday.

AFC Fylde Women were beaten for the first time all year on Sunday, going down 2-0 at Norton & Stockton Ancients in the first round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.

The Coasters’ previous defeat in a competitive fixture was also in the North East in the same competition, a 1-0 loss to Middlesbrough last December.

Having won their qualifier against Blackburn Rovers, Fylde had plenty of chances in this first-round tie in Stockton-on-Tees.

However, Danny Murphy’s players could not beat keeper Laura Wareham, with Emma Hickson and Demi Devereaux among those going close.

The Ancients, one of the two sides to have held Fylde to a draw this season, won it with two second-half goals from Bianca Owens.

Substitute Georgia Leech had been on the field barely two minutes when she delivered the free-kick for the 67th-minute opener.

Owens then doubled her tally with four minutes to play following a strong run and cross by Sacha Millward.

The Ancients will visit Leeds or Rotherham in the second round, while Fylde return to knockout action on Sunday at home to Hull in the first round of the Women’s National League Cup.

Before then, they bid to maintain their unbeaten start to the Division One North campaign in Thursday’s 8pm derby at bottom club Chorley.

AFC Fylde: Heyworth, Hickson (Flanagan 65), Seed, James, Boylan (Hindley 76), Borrowdale, Devereaux (Webster 87), Kelly, Mason (Corrigan 65), Wood, Bentley. Not used: O’Mahony, Dunion.
