“A draw’s a fair result to be honest”: AFC Fylde Women and Leeds United Women take a point apiece
AFC Fylde Women and their Leeds United counterparts couldn’t be separated on Sunday.
Danny Murphy felt a point apiece was the right outcome after watching his AFC Fylde Women team draw with Leeds United Women at Kellamergh Park on Sunday.
The FA Women’s National League Division One North top-of-the-table clash ended goalless following a game in which both teams had chances to break the deadlock.
Lauryn Wood was narrowly off target for Fylde early on, having seen Coasters keeper Izzy Heyworth hold Monique Watson’s curling effort.
A goalline clearance denied Fylde before the break, after which Heyworth made a crucial stop from a Leeds corner.
The Fylde defence also blocked an attempt from Leeds’ Izzy Dean before a second goalline clearance, this time by the Coasters to thwart Ava Spencer-Smith, ensured the teams could not be separated.
Speaking afterwards, Murphy said: “I think, looking back on the game, we could have probably nicked it in the first half.
“They had chances in the second half. If you look at the bigger picture of the game, it was a highly competitive game.
“A draw’s a fair result to be honest. We were the better team first half, they were the better team second half.
“We’ve had four chances in the first half, which I would probably expect us to score.
“Second half, they’ve had one cleared off the line and the keeper’s made a good save but, from our four chances to their two, if you weigh them up like that, then maybe we should have got the result in the end.”
Fylde are back in action on Sunday, when they travel to Norton and Stockton Ancients in round one of the Women’s FA Cup (2pm).
