'Brilliant area' Blackpool FC legend Charlie Adam backs City of Culture bid & opens up on love of town

“It’s a brilliant area to live and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there.”

Blackpool FC icon Charlie Adam has discussed his love for the Fylde coast and backed Blackpool’s bid for the City of Culture Award in an exclusive interview with the Gazette.

The former Rangers and Liverpool midfielder made 91 league league appearances for the Seasiders between 2009 and 2011, and also briefly managed Fleetwood Town after retiring from the game.

Adam spoke to the Gazette about his time in Blackpool and love for the area

Ultimately, what’s kept me coming back is the fact that my wife is from that part of England,” Adam said on behalf of New Betting Offers. “Blackpool changed my life and my career. My opportunity in England was down to coming to Blackpool first

“Our promotion to the Premier League was special and I was playing with a group of lads who were really together. We had a real team spirit and great culture. It’s a brilliant area to live and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there.

“Everybody knows where Blackpool is. It’s a seaside town with a whole range of entertainment, whether that’s football, tourism, music or dancing. Generations of families go to Blackpool on their holidays and holidaymakers are a big part of the community.

“Not everybody sees what is behind that, but so many people come on their holidays and if there is a recognition for that then Blackpool should certainly be in the conversation. In the summer, the promenades are rammed and it’s so busy. It would be great if Blackpool could be recognised for how many people choose to spend their time there.”

Despite an underwhelming stint in charge of Fleetwood, Adam has remained in the game and is currently a set-piece coach at Everton.

Once described by Sir Alex Ferguson as an ‘incredible striker of the ball’, Adam has retained his links to the Fylde coast and still enjoys coming to the area. He added: “There are parts of Blackpool that need to be developed and regenerated, which comes down to investment from the council and other sources, and we have to improve the way of life in some areas.

“Nonetheless, it’s a brilliant place to be. I go there most weeks with my family for a walk or whatever it may be. The football club can be central to the town’s growth and give the people a lot to cheer.”
