Fleetwood drew on the night and lost on aggregate, falling to defeat 6-3 over the course of the two legs.

Town opened the scoring through Danny Andrew, who was the only change to Friday's team, just before the first drinks break.

Shortly after the start of the second half Wycombe were level thanks to Fred Onyedinma, capitalising on a Harry Souttar mistake. Ched Evans made no mistake from the spot, once again, in the second half but Onyedinma's second of the night in the final minutes sealed the Chairboys' trip to Wembley.

It was a much improved performance from Town who were impressive throughout and Barton was pleased with how his side reacted to the heavy 4-1 defeat in the first leg, putting it down to the squad's togetherness.

He said: "I asked the lads to respond and show what we see on the training ground every day. I thought we did that.

"I thought we approached the game correctly, we did everything that we could to win the game, created opportunities.

"In football sometimes for all the great work you do, sometimes you need a bit of a rub of the green or a ball to bounce your way.

"In the first leg the damage was done really, we gave ourselves a mountain to climb but what I love about the group is that we came here believing, we never gave up on it.

"That performance tonight showed just how tight knit we were as a group and we’ll come back bigger and stronger."

The Cod Army were unlucky not to have had a penalty in the first half, Barrie McKay's effort striking an arm on the way towards goal.

Barton however did not want to take anything away from Wycombe's success.

"I don’t want to bring it into refereeing decisions because it will take away from Gareth’s and Wycombe’s achievements," he said.

"It’s a phenomenal achievement for their football, from the places they’ve been and the way they’ve done it.

"Over the two legs they’ve deserved to go through, they’ve hit the back of the net six times is you can’t begrudge anyone that over two games.

"I’m not going to blame a refereeing decision for it because we’d probably have to start back on Friday night. We’re delving into the past.

"We’ve got to come back and focus on all the strides that we’ve made in my two years here.

"We’ve got to improve and nudge the group on."
