Ex-Blackpool and Birmingham City man departs non-league role after tough start to the season

There was both good and bad news for some ex-Blackpool figures over the weekend.

Former Blackpool midfielder Neil Danns has stepped back from his non-league coaching role.

The 43-year-old took over at Southport in National League North last summer, and helped the Sandgrounders to the semi-finals of the FA Trophy in his first season in charge.

This helped to change the fortunates of the club following a difficult start to the campaign, but that bounce hasn’t carried over into the current term.

After seeing his side pick up just five points from their opening seven games, Danns’ time at Haig Avenue has come to an end.

The ex-Guyana played for his fair share of clubs throughout his career, with the likes of Birmingham City, Crystal Palace and Bolton Wanderers all on his CV - alongside two stints in Tangerine.

After initially spending time on loan with the Seasiders in 2003, he returned to Bloomfield Road for another temporary stint in 2017, featuring a total of 31 times for the club.

It was during his second spell that success came his way in Tangerine, starting the 2-1 play-off final victory over Exeter City during Gary Bowyer’s tenure at the helm.

Since hanging up his boots, the retired midfielder had Macclesfield Town and worked as an assistant for Tranmere before taking on his latest role.

In a statement announcing his departure, the Merseyside outfit wrote: “Southport Football Club can confirm that Neil Danns has chosen to step aside from his position as first team manager.

Neil will continue to support the club in the short term as we manage the transition and consider the next steps for the first team.

“Neil has given an enormous amount to Southport and this club has meant a great deal to him. Throughout his time as manager, he has represented Southport with dignity, care and a genuine desire to move the club forward.

“He has built real relationships with the players, staff and supporters and has always wanted the very best for everyone connected with the club.

“We are incredibly grateful for everything Neil has given us and, on a personal level, for the way he has conducted himself throughout his time here. He leaves the managerial role with our genuine thanks, affection and respect and will always be very welcome at Southport Football Club.”

It was a better weekend on an individual basis for a couple of more recent ex-Blackpool players.

Kylian Kouassi departed Bloomfield Road less than a week ago, but has already made himself known at his new club.

After being introduced off the bench in Colchester United’s 2-0 defeat away to Bristol Rovers on the day he signed, the forward was given his first start against Swindon Town at the weekend - and bagged his first goal for Danny Cowley’s side after 13 minutes.

Unfortunately for the U’s, Ian Holloway’s current team were able to come from behind for a 3-1 win at the County Ground.

Elsewhere in League Two, former Seasiders loanee Joel Randall was on hand with a debut goal in second half stoppage time to help Chesterfield to a 3-3 draw against Barnet.

The midfielder had spent the second half of last season on the Fylde Coast, but things didn’t work out.

After spending the summer back with Bolton Wanderers, the 26-year-old made a Deadline Day loan move to the SMH Group Stadium.
