Blackpool boss issues verdict on defender's debut ahead of swift Barnsley reunion

Josh Earl became Blackpool’s newest addition last week - and made his Seasiders debut on Saturday afternoon.

Ian Evatt was delighted by the account Josh Earl gave of himself on his Blackpool debut following his switch from Barnsley.

The defender made the move to Bloomfield Road for an undisclosed fee last week, penning a three-year deal, which includes a 12-month option, with the Seasiders.

Ian Evatt immediately named the 27-year-old in his starting XI for Saturday’s League One clash with Peterborough United - which ended in a 4-0 victory.

Earl is an experienced third tier player, having played 163 times at the level so far, including his two years at Oakwell - where he’ll be back as a visiting player on Wednesday evening.

“I’m so pleased with him that he showed everybody what he can do,” Evatt said after the centre back’s debut in Tangerine.

“Josh is a player that I admire and have watched for a long time - I know what he can bring to us.

“I was so pleased with his debut. It was an excellent day, but not one to get too excited about as we’ve got another big one to come on Wednesday.”

Fellow new signing, and returning hero, Jerry Yates stole most of the headlines on Saturday as he found the back of the net off the bench on his Bloomfield Road return.

This followed Jordan Williams’ and Dion Charles’ first goals for the Seasiders, and one for Karoy Anderson.

“I said everyone’s so excited about Jerry being here, and that adds pressure,” Evatt stated.

“For him to score on his comeback game is fantastic for everybody. He’s made a huge impact with everyone in the dressing already, and a huge impact with me and my staff.

“He’s infectious with everything he does, but it’s about the group and not just about any individual, and Jez will be the first to admit that.

“Everyone’s going to speak about him, and I love that because it was perfect, it was almost a fairytale, but people shouldn’t lose sight of the work the two strikers did before he came on. I thought they were really difficult to play against.

“I was delighted for Dion (Charles) to get his goal and Blocko (Tom Bloxham) is going from strength to strength at the minute.”
