Blackpool FC Community Trust column: Providing information and education about prostate cancer this month
Blackpool FC Community Trust’s latest Gazette column focuses on Global Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.
Blackpool FC Community Trust (BFCCT) is supporting Global Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, with activity taking place at Bloomfield Road throughout September.
On Saturday, ahead of the Seasiders’ home fixture against Bromley FC, BFCCT staff and volunteers will be outside Bloomfield Road sharing information with supporters about prostate cancer, PSA testing and the signs and symptoms to be aware of.
Most men with early prostate cancer do not have any symptoms.
However, possible changes to look out for include difficulty starting to urinate or emptying the bladder, a weak flow, feeling that the bladder has not emptied properly, dribbling after urinating, needing to urinate more often than usual, particularly at night, or a sudden need to urinate.
These symptoms can be caused by a number of other health problems, but Prostate Cancer UK recommends speaking to your GP if you notice changes to the way you urinate.
Around one in eight men in the UK will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime.
Prostate cancer mainly affects men over 50, with the risk increasing with age.
The risk is also higher for black men and men with a family history of prostate cancer.
In England, more than 56,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, while more than 10,000 men die from the disease annually.
The Prostate Cancer Awareness team will also visit BFCCT’s Community Club at the North Stand Community Hub on Tuesday, September 22 (1.30pm-3pm).
Members of the community will be able to find out more about prostate cancer and speak to the team.
Through supporting the campaign, BFCCT is helping to make important health information accessible to the local community and raise awareness among supporters and residents throughout September.
