Solihull Moors 1 AFC Fylde 3: Coasters continue a promising start to the season

AFC Fylde’s win on Monday made it three victories in five to start the season.

Goals from Harvey Broad, Jack Morris and Luca Thomas saw AFC Fylde make it back-to-back Bank Holiday wins in the National League with victory at Solihull Moors on Monday.

The Coasters enjoyed plenty of possession in the opening stages , despite not creating any clear-cut chances.

Solihull almost opened the scoring with a speculative long-range effort that threatened to catch Zac Jones off his line, but the ball drifted harmlessly wide.

However, Fylde boss Craig Mahon was forced into two first-half changes with the injured Ethan Mitchell and Cedric Main replaced by Thomas and Morris.

Broad, fresh from scoring twice against Forest Green Rovers last Friday, had the game’s best chance when he hit the post midway through the half.

Moments later, Adam Lewis hit the crossbar from just outside the box as Fylde started to crank up the pressure.

It was Broad who opened the scoring after 34 minutes, profiting from an error by Solihull keeper Max Metcalfe.

He misjudged the bounce from Jones’ long kick and, showing a striker’s instinct, Broad gambled and continued his run to be rewarded with an open goal.

Morris started to grow into the game, testing Metcalfe with a low shot before scoring on 42 minutes.

Controlling a long kick from Jones, he used his pace to drift behind the Solihull defence and across the penalty box before slotting home a calm, low finish.

The hosts started the second half brightly, pulling a goal back on 51 minutes when Jacob Wakeling scored from close range after Fylde were unable to clear a corner.

Solihull should have been level a few minutes later as Wakeling forced a good save from Jones, but Scott High could not convert the rebound.

Fylde quickly restored their two-goal cushion on the hour as Broad, Aaron Drewe and Morris all combined before Thomas scored his first of the season with a powerful finish.

Despite late pressure from Solihull and a goalline clearance from Greg Olley, the Coasters defended their box well and held on for a deserved victory.
