The trams seen here in Talbot Square are on the Marton route (opened in 1901) which followed Clifton Street, Church Street and Whitegate Drive. The foundation stone for the drinking fountain, with it's elaborate cast iron canopy, was laid in 1870 by William Henry Cocker Esq. The public toilets were a later addition. The fountain was demolished in the 1920s and was later replaced by a large tram shelter. Behind the fountain is Yate's Wine Lodge which opened in 1896 in the building that began life in 1868 as the Assembly Rooms and included the Theatre Royal (later the Tivoli Cinema) , in 1880 Blackpool's first free library opened there | National World
