Pedestrian in his 80s remains in ‘critical condition’ after being trapped under van on Bibby’s Road in Bispham

A man in his 80s remains in a “critical condition” after being struck by a van in Bispham.

A Ford Transit van collided with a pedestrian on Bibby’s Road at the junction with Bispham Road at around 11.50am on Friday.

The pedestrian - a man in his 80s - suffered “serious injuries” after becoming trapped underneath the vehicle.

Three fire engines from Blackpool, Bispham, and Chorley attended the scene alongside paramedics and the police.

Firefighters used high-pressure airbags to release the casualty before handing them to the care of ambulance crews.

The casualty remained in hospital in “critical condition” on Saturday.

Officers said the driver of the van would be spoken to “in due course”.

Sgt Paul McCurrie, of Lancashire Police’s Specialist Operations Team, said: “This collision has left a man with some extremely serious injuries and my thoughts are with him and his loved ones at this time.

“Work is ongoing to establish the full circumstances which led to the collision and I would ask any witnesses or anyone with CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone footage which could assist our investigation to contact the police as soon as possible.”

The road was closed in both directions as emergency services worked at the scene.
