Youngsters were sent home from Highfield Humanities College on Thursday afternoon after the deliberate fire, which set the sprinklers off, causing ‘significant water damage’, the fire service said.

A spokesman for the high school, the last in Blackpool under local authority control, said: “We do not tolerate any action which disrupts the education of children at our school.

“We would like to thank students for their calm, understanding response to Thursday’s events. Their health and safety is of paramount importance to us.”

The school reopened as normal on Friday.
