Poundland issues statement on future of Blackpool stores

Poundland has issued a statement regarding the future of its two Blackpool stores.

Following confirmation that the discount retailer is closing its Cleveleys site, there has been speculation online about the Blackpool Retail Park (Squires Gate Lane) and Blackpool Town Centre (Bank Hey Street) stores.

Now, Poundland has provided clarity on both shops.

A spokesperson for Poundland told the Gazette: “We announced earlier this year our restructuring store closure programme had ended and that means there are no changes planned by Poundland for either of our Blackpool stores.”

Last month, a Poundland spokesperson confirmed the looming closure of the Cleveleys store. They said: “We began a clearance sale at the store in Cleveleys at 75 Victoria Road West earlier this week (on February 11) as the store is due to close on March 23.

“We can also confirm that any future and current closures (and that’s the case for Cleveleys) are a consequence of standard business-as-usual lease events expected at a retailer with a large store network, not because of the restructure.

“I’m afraid that's the situation here - we’ve been unable to secure lease terms that would enable us to keep trading there.”

The Ormskirk Poundland is also set to close on March 30.
