Inspirational fundraiser Tony Howarth from Lytham is today once again donning his towering Blackpool Tower costume to take on the London Marathon, bringing a bit of seaside spirit to the Big Smoke.

The 67-year-old has raised tens of thousands of pounds for charity over the years and is once again running in aid of Samaritans.

As the race began this morning, Visit Blackpool, the tourist arm of Blackpool Council, took to Instagram to send their well wishes to the charity champ.

Alongside a picture of Tony in his Blackpool Tower costume, Visit Blackpool said: “A HUGE good luck to local man, Tony Howarth, who is taking on the London Marathon today in true Northern style – dressed as the iconic Blackpool Tower! It will be his tenth London Marathon.

“We’re all rooting for you, Tony! Stay safe, keep hydrated and enjoy every moment.

“Also, good luck to all those running Blackpool Marathon today.”

Visit Blackpool then also shared a quote from the man himself.

Tony told the councuil: “10 out of 10 London Marathons. No pressure…

“To make things slightly harder (because clearly I don’t learn), I’ll be running dressed as Blackpool Tower 🗼

“If you see a tall, slightly wobbly structure heading through London… keep a safe distance.

“It’s all for a brilliant cause - the Samaritans 💚 They’re there 24/7, 365 days a year for anyone who needs someone to talk to.”

The London Marathon kicked off at 9:35am.

The average finishing time is around 4 hours and 30 minutes.
