MP says funding secured to improve Fleetwood playgrounds after residents raise concerns

New funding has been secured to improve or build playgrounds in Fleetwood following concerns raised by residents, a local MP has said.

Blackpool North and Fleetwood MP Lorraine Beavers said she had been told by “hundreds” of people during a recent consultation that play facilities in the town were in poor condition.

In a post shared on April 5, she said: “Our children have the right to safe spaces where they can play, explore and learn.

“But playgrounds are more than that, you told me how they support the mental and physical health of children and their whole families.”

She added that after “years of underfunding and neglect”, playgrounds in the area were “failing our children and families”, but said she was “fighting for better”.

Ms Beavers said additional funding, on top of the £20 million Pride in Fleetwood programme, would be used to improve or build three playgrounds in the area.

She said: “I’ve got the money. Let’s make sure it’s invested properly.”

The investment is focused on the Pharos and Mount areas, although the facilities will be open to all.

In a video message, she also raised concerns about a lack of facilities for older children, saying: “We’ve got toddler swings, but where are the swings for the six and seven-year-olds? We haven’t got any.”

Residents are now being invited to share ideas on how the funding should be used, including whether to build new sites or upgrade existing ones.
