Fleetwood MP Lorraine Beavers warns landfill site regulatory system 'is broken'
“If the system cannot stop that from happening, it is broken.”
Fleetwood MP Lorraine Beavers says the regulatory system that monitors landfill sites ‘is broken’.
Speaking in Parliament this week, Ms Beavers, also the MP for Blackpool North said if the system can’t stop a smell from a landfill site happening, then it isn’t working.

She said: “ For nearly three years, the people of Fleetwood have been forced to live with an intolerable smell from the Jameson Road landfill site.
“They have complained, protested and reported the effects on their health to the council, the Environment Agency, the Government and to me as their MP.
“Over the past two and a half years the EA has increasingly taken severe acton against the operators of the site after they had breached their permit and acted unlawfully in the process.
“And still the smell remains and at times recently worse than ever.
“More than 4,000 complaints were made.
“The central point I wish to make today is that it is proof of a broken regulatory system.

“If residents can make 1000s of complaints, that people and businesses can be forced to leave an area all because of an operator acting unlawfully - and residents are still being left to breathe the same foul air.
“If the system cannot stop that from happening, it is broken.”
