“They were unsure what it was and so called the police who came to have a look.”

However neighbouring Aspire Academy headteacher John Woods confirmed it was a false alarm.

He told The Gazette: “There was no bomb.

“Highfurlong School which is attached to Aspire is having some work done round the back and workmen discovered a metal object.

“They were unsure what it was and so called the police who came to have a look.

“Officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) were called but it was just a piece of metal.

“There was no panic, we didn’t have to evacuate and as it was the end of the school day, pupils at Highfurlong were ushered home.”

A spokesperson from Blackpool Police said: “We received a report that contractors had found of what is thought to be a historic ordnance in the grounds of a school on Blackpool Old Road shortly after 1pm on Thursday July 16.

“Officers attended and the item was found to be a part of a bell and not a viable ordnance.”

Highfurlong School has been approached for a comment.
