Fleetwood Festival of Transport is 'all systems go' but desperate plea made for marshalls and volunteers

‘It is all systems go and everything is in place for another brilliant day.’

Fleetwood Festival of Transport will go ahead on Sunday.

It was touch and go whether a huge fire that ripped through a store on Lord Street last month could affect the massive event but organisers say no diversions will be needed and a plan is firmly in place.

But they still desperately need marshalls and helpers to make sure everything runs smoothly.

Lord Street is still partially closed to traffic beteween London Street and Kemp Street but it is and still will be linked by the pavement as a throughfare.

Fleetwood Festival of Transport organiser Rebecca Murdoch said: “It is all systems go and everything is in place for another brilliant day.

“People will be able to walk down one side of Lord Street, near Boots and Peacocks, and we will make sure people know where to walk.

“It’s been a bit painful this year but we are there now.”

To ensure there’s a fair share of entertainment, activities have been split along the whole section of Lord Street and North Albert Street.

There will be bands at either end of Lord Street and kids entertainment too - incluiding Transformers and Lightning McQeen at the North Euston end of the festival.

A host of actitivites are planned for St Peter’s Church and new this year is ‘Harriet Spirit’ a nine foot stunning sculpture, commissioned by artist Janine Walker, will take centre stage in the procession. This year it will run from the North Euston to Kemp Street.

On the transport side, there will be makes and models of vehicles from all eras, including film and TV cars.

What is Fleetwood Festival of Transport?

Fleetwood Festival of Transport or Tram Sunday as it’s widely known is an annual celebration of all things transport held in the heart of Fleetwood.

First launched in the 1980s the event has grown into one of the largest transport-themed festivals in the UK attracting visitors from across the country for a full day of free entertainment.

A town taken over by transport

Each year Fleetwood’s main streets are transformed into a huge open-air exhibition packed with vehicles from past and present.

The transport festival first took place in 1985 as a part of the celebrations for the anniversary of Blackpool trams.

Expect to see heritage trams, vintage buses, classic cars, motorbikes and a wide range of unusual and eye-catching transport displays.

Many vehicles take part in a lively parade giving spectators a chance to see them in action rather than just on display.

Beyond the vehicles, there’s plenty more to enjoy. Street performers, live music, creative arts acts, funfair rides and market stalls help create a festival atmosphere ensuring there’s something for every age group.

A free family favourite

One of the festival’s biggest draws is that it’s completely free to attend.

Organised by volunteers and supported by the local community, Tram Sunday is a celebration of Fleetwood’s transport heritage and its vibrant seaside culture.
