Cleveleys bar plans spark debate as residents call for 'more retail, not more bars'
Plans for a new bar in Cleveleys town centre have prompted a lively reaction from residents, with many calling for a return to traditional high street shops instead of further expansion of the night-time economy.
Following the Gazette’s report on proposals to transform the former Rogerson’s Family Butchers site on Victoria Road West into a licensed premises, readers took to social media to share their views - and opinion appears divided.
A common theme among commenters was concern that the high street is losing its retail identity.
Elton Gerard Ricketts said: “The high street needs quality retail, not another bar!”

Carolyn Whalley added: “It is a retail high street, it needs to stay retail.”
Others highlighted specific gaps in the town’s shopping offer.
Sharon Denby said: “It’s a florist we need in Cleveleys centre, not another bar.”
Irene Houghton added: “There’s enough bars in Cleveleys, we need more food shops!”
Delboy Bling commented: “Cleveleys needs a mans retail outlet, there’s nothing for men.”
Some residents expressed frustration at what they see as an oversaturation of licensed venues.
Sue Pates said: “We do not need another bar.”
Lesley Christine Brady added: “Don’t need any more bars surely.”
Pamela Jordan simply said: “Not another.”
Marilyn Gledhill wrote: “Yeah, let’s encourage more alcoholism.”
However, not everyone opposed the plans, with some pointing to changing economic realities on the high street.
Damien Niquet said: “Only way to make money is to open a bar.”
Emma Louise wrote: “Wow, so people complain when a unit is empty and they complain when it’s full. Obviously retail isn’t working in Cleveleys or there would still be trading.”
Others welcomed the potential addition.
Colin Smith said: “Can’t wait, this is going to be a fantastic addition to Cleveleys.”
Philip Allan Knagg added: “Just what Cleveleys needs.”
Lisa Bower reflected on how attitudes have shifted, writing: “The comments used to be ‘not another charity shop’. Never thought that would change!”
The application for a premises licence at 110 Victoria Road West remains under consideration by Wyre Council.
