Barton 37, who formerly played for Manchester City and Newcastle midfielder, was due to stand trial today on allegations that he assaulted former Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel at the end of a League One match last April.

But trials at Sheffield crown court are currently on hold because of the pandemic, with cases delayed for months until services can return to normal.

The case has now been set aside for a five-day trial beginning on June 7 2021, timed for the end of the next football season.

Judge Jeremy Richardson QC set the date in Barton’s absence.
