Saturday’s match at Mill Farm finished with 10 minutes remaining following a serious-looking injury to Latics trialist Nico Lawrence.

Wigan were 3-0 up at the time thanks to two goals from Chris Sze and one for Fraser Murray.

Speaking afterwards, the Fylde head coach said: “Speaking to Wigan’s bench, we felt it was the right decision to call the game (off).

“There’s some things more important than football. All our thoughts and wishes go to that young lad and hopefully he can have a full recovery.

“It’s never nice to see anything happen like that and everybody at Fylde will wish him the best.”

The match marked the end of the Coasters’ home pre-season programme ahead of the new National League season.

Two more away games are on the schedule with a visit to Morecambe on Tuesday, followed by Saturday’s trip to Warrington Rylands.

Mahon added: “Even though we’re playing against a League One team who have a fantastic set-up, (a) fantastic club who I know really well, I always demand more of my players.

“I thought at times we looked really good. Some of the patterns, some of the play, some of the decision making and some of the awareness from the lads on the pitch was outstanding.

“There’s still things we need to be better at. If you look at it, 3-0; two penalties that we’ll watch back just to make sure (of) the reasons why or how they were given - but then why did they get into those positions as well?

“There’s loads for us to learn and although the main thing is that young lad at the end of the game, I’m really proud of the boys and how they approached the game today.”
