Fleetwood Town winger Wes Burns focuses on matches not contract talks

“Anything can happen in this division,” said head coach Grayson. “We played really well on Saturday (in the 1-1 home draw with Charlton Athletic) but didn’t win.

“At Sunderland we played OK and could quite easily have come away with something but you learn from every game you are involved in.

“You dust yourself down, move on and work on things on Thursday and Friday.

“Then we have a local derby against Accrington, which certainly has an edge to it and will be a good way to respond and get three points."

And Grayson hopes to have a couple of players back in contention.

He said: "Hopefully when Charlie goes back into training this week (after Covid) we’ll see how his physical condition is because we don’t know how much he’s suffered from it.

“Sam Finley was out, as he was at the weekend, with a little niggle in his groin but hopefully he might be available as well.”

Grayson has seen Town take five points from his five games in charge and slip to 17th, though he still feels they are close to hitting their straps.

Even so, he was disappointed with their errors at the Stadium of Light, particularly with the goals conceded.

He added: "We work hard on the defensive side and individuals have to make sure they do their jobs when it's asked of them. The first goal was probably avoidable and the second one as well.

"The big thing we spoke about in the dressing room was that when you come to a place like this and you get the ball, you have to keep it.

"We probably turned over possession too easily at times but there were too many unforced errors,which gave them the chance to come at you with good players.

"So we're disappointed that we didn't keep the ball on a big, open pitch, where we could have hurt them.

“But I thought we kept (Charlie) Wyke quiet and I thought (Aiden) McGeady was quiet - two influential players - and there wasn’t a great deal in it.

“I think it’s probably a testament to how we played in the first half that Sunderland had to go and change their formation.”
