Town’s head coach knows it will be a tough task to reach the top six but doesn’t feel there’s a lot between clubs in League One.

Fleetwood are 15th but only eight points off the play-off places and Grayson said: “That’s got to be the aim for all of the clubs like ourselves.

“The division is so tight and there isn’t a great deal of difference in terms of quality from top to bottom.

“The teams that are more consistent are at the top end, maybe carrying the bigger squad which allows them to chop and change when they need to.

“You saw last week with Accrington Stanley (who lost 7-0 at Peterborough United, today’s visitors to Fleetwood) – they found it very difficult when you lose a couple of players. It takes its toll.

“We feel we are in a group of clubs and can still achieve something come the end of the season.

“It’s going to be a tough ask because other teams have games in hand. But we certainly don’t want to let things pass us by when you never know what might happen.”

Darren Ferguson’s Peterborough arrive at Highbury second in the table, just a point behind Hull City with a game in hand.

Grayson isn’t surprised to see the Posh at the top end of the table but expects them to respect Fleetwood.

He said of today’s 3pm opponents: “When you’ve got Jonson Clarke-Harris up there, Sammie Smodiczs and other players who are capable of winning matches and scoring goals, it’s no surprise they’re pushing for those top two places.

“We know that we need to be on it. A 7-0 result will be very pleasing for Darren and his team but what it also does is make sure we’re focused for a tough game.

“If they can do that to Accrington, then they might be able to do it to other teams. It focuses the mind.

“B ut teams will be aware of what we’ve got at our disposal, the run we’ve been on since I’ve been at the football club and what the players have done over the last 18 months or so.

“It’s got the ingredients to be a good game, one we think we can win and we’re certainly setting out to try to.”
