Harvey Saunders 'success story' so satisfying for Joey Barton

Town’s impressive performance last Friday saw them end Hull City’s perfect start with a resounding 4-1 win at Highbury.

The Cod Army have had a mixed start to the season, opening it with four straight victories.

They then lost the same number of games in a row before winning the last two against Aston Villa’s U21s and Hull.

Barton said:“Fleetwood Town’s kind of football is on the front foot and we’re better doing that, pressing and getting after teams.

“We know we can cause teams problems and when we do it right it’s tough to play against, so the players deserve every bit of credit.

“I said (after the Hull game) to the lads who weren’t here last season: ‘That’s how we played. That was Fleetwood Town.’ We’re a difficult side to play against for every team that played us.

“This has always been a difficult place to come across my time here and it was important we got back to that after losing against Wimbledon.

“It’s nice the Sky cameras were here. The last time the cameras were here Everton beat us 5-2, and the time before that we weren’t fantastic in the play-offs against Wycombe (losing 4-1).”

Town’s boss is now looking for his players to kick on and has set his sights on this weekend’s opponents Lincoln City.

The Imps travel to the Fylde coast on Saturday, sitting second in League One after their first defeat to Bristol Rovers last weekend.

“That (victory over Hull) will give us an enormous boost to go into another tough challenge next Saturday against Lincoln City,” Barton said.

“We’d lost three in the league but had been in every game.

“We should have beaten Peterborough until we conceded two in stoppage time.

“Wimbledon scored and sat back. To be fair, they had the better of the chances but there wasn’t much in it.

“We should have come away from Rochdale with a point and could easily have come out with three. That’s football sometimes.

“You have to keep your consistency and preach the method and principles that have stood me in good stead during my short journey in coaching.

“We kept calm (against Hull), made some big calls and it paid off. I’m so pleased for the players because their attitude, endeavour and quality are what we needed to get our campaign back up and running.”
