Mason bagged a first-half hat-trick to consign Town to a third straight defeat under interim boss Wiles at Stadium MK on Tuesday.

Fleetwood had to wait until the 83rd minute to pull one back, though it could have been different had Josh Morris converted an opportunity for the visitors with barely a minute played.

As the defence awaited an offside flag which never rose, Morris saw his casual finish saved by Andrew Fisher.

And Wiles, who must lift his charges for a visit to Wigan Athletic on Saturday, said: “That’s the ruthless side we need to really start ingraining into the players.

“Regardless, just play to the whistle. He (Morris) has a really good chance one versus one, and if he scores we give ourselves the platform to play our football and create more opportunities.

“We need to make sure we’re more ruthless in front of goal.”

The Cod Army have slipped to 12th, having found the net only five times in their last nine League One games, winning one.

They have the perfect opportunity to put that right against a Latics side who have shipped six goals in their last two outings but Wiles knows Town must improve.
