The 24-year-old midfielder joined the club as a free agent at the weekend, penning a two-year deal at Highbury.

It ended a seven-year stay at Rochdale, where he gained experience of League One and League Two.

Camps, who has this week been joined in the Town midfield by Jordan Rossiter, told The Gazette: “I’ve played 240 games and I feel I’ve got all the experience I need.

“I’ve seen League One for the last however many years and I feel I can add something to this team.

“I say I’m a creative player. I try to score as many goals as I can, assist as many goals as I can, try to create as many chances as I can, work hard for the team and I won’t give up.”

As well as joining a Town team looking to improve on last season’s run to the play-offs, there was another attraction for Camps in making the move to Highbury.

He may be an experienced footballer in terms of games played but he can now learn from Paul Coutts and Glenn Whelan, both of whom have knowledge of higher-level football.

Camps said: “Before I signed and seeing the players they had, there’s not another club I could go to in League One which has players like that I can learn from.

“Being a midfield player myself, playing the deeper role they play, I think they can help a lot and teach me a lot of things to push me on in my career.”

Having come through the ranks at Rochdale, this is the first time Camps has moved clubs.

The switch would have gone through sooner but for the pandemic which saw football suspended.

Camps said: “I’ve had to stay patient and thankfully it’s all done. When I came here and spoke to the manager (Joey Barton), it kind of went quite quickly.

“They were in the play-offs, so there was a little interest before that and then they were concentrating on the play-offs. They had to get that out of the way and after that it’s gone quite quickly.

“I feel like it’s the right club to come to – it’s a club pushing to go up.

“I’ve played in the Rochdale team when we’ve nearly got in the play-offs but for the last three years we’ve been fighting relegation.

“I’ve got that experience but I just feel it’s the right time to come to a team, fight for promotion and see how we go on.”
