Wycombe Wanderers 0-1 Blackpool FC: Seasiders take major step towards survival with rare away win
Blackpool overcame Wycombe Wanderers with a 1-0 win on the road.
Blackpool took another major step towards League One survival with a 1-0 victory over Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park.
A Luke Leahy own goal at the beginning of the second half proved to be the difference between the two sides in Buckinghamshire, as Ian Evatt’s side held on with 10-men to claim a crucial three points after a Hayden Coulson red card.
Alongside the rare away win over the Chairboys, Exeter City’s 3-3 draw with Stockport County elsewhere, puts the Seasiders six points clear of the relegation zone with just two games remaining.
The first chance of the game fell Karoy Anderson’s way after just one minute, but the midfielder was unable to beat Will Norris as the goalkeeper raced off his line.
Blackpool’s next opportunity also came through the Charlton Athletic loanee, with his second shot towards goal heading just over the crossbar.
Wycombe had moments of their own in the first half, and were gifted their clearest by a Seasiders error.
After catching the visitors playing out from the back, the ball found its way to early substitute Fred Onyedinma - who couldn’t generate enough power on his effort to beat Bailey Peacock-Farrell.
Michael Duff’s side grew as the half progressed, with some pressure placed on the Blackpool backline; without anything too dangerous to trouble the man between the sticks.
The Seasiders edged their way in front immediately after the restart. Trouble stemmed from the CJ Hamilton cross, with Norris pushing the ball behind after nearly being caught out.
From the resulting corner, a Leighton Clarkson ball into the box took a slight touch off Leahy to break the deadlock.
Hamilton had a chance to double the lead, but couldn’t keep his shot down after cutting inside onto his left foot.
Heading into the final 20 minutes, Blackpool had their numbers reduced, with Coulson sent off after being booked for a second time.
On the back of this, Wycombe had several chances. Onyedinma came close with a headed attempt, before Niall Huggins saw an attempt saved by Peacock-Farrell.
The Northern Ireland international stepped up with more heroics shortly after, completing an impressive double save with a stop to deny Luke Harris from close-range.
