The goalkeeper’s switch to SPL side St Mirren ends speculation linking Alnwick with a permanent move to Bloomfield Road.

The 27-year-old, who was recently released by Rangers, has agreed a two-year contract with his new club.

It had previously been mooted that Pool head coach Neil Critchley would want both Alnwick and Chris Maxwell to fight it out for the number one jersey.

But, in his first interview with St Mirren, Alnwick says he wanted to be at a club where he would be guaranteed regular games.

“I feel like I’ve got unfinished business up here,” he said. “I’ve been down in League One in England for the last couple of seasons and done well.

“I look at my time at Rangers, I didn’t play many games but I look at the league and I feel I can do well.

“It’s time for me to show people what I can do up here, hopefully in a long run of games with a good club.

“I’m delighted and I want to be able to show what I can do and I think this presents me with a good opportunity to do that.

“Over the last couple of seasons I’ve played a lot of games. Last season with Blackpool I had an injury in December time but before that I was playing regularly.

“I probably had opportunities where I could have gone somewhere else and maybe been a number two and fought it out, but that’s not really what I’m about.

“I want to show people what I can do and if that takes me to the very top, or it doesn’t, then so be it but at least I’ll be playing games.

“This is a big opportunity for me to stamp down as many games as possible and try to get this club as many points as we can.”

Alnwick was Blackpool’s first-choice keeper last season but has not played since injuring an arm in the Boxing Day defeat to Accrington Stanley.

Before his injury, Alnwick had been linked with a permanent switch to Blackpool during the January window.

The Seasiders subsequently turned to Chris Maxwell, who initially signed until the end of the season but has now agreed a long-term deal.
