How Huddersfield Town were able to tempt ex-Watford striker away from Blackpool FC

Ashley Fletcher has departed Blackpool after two seasons with the club.

Ashley Fletcher has agreed a deal with Huddersfield Town despite Blackpool’s best efforts to keep the striker at Bloomfield Road.

The 30-year-old has proven to be a hit in Tangerine over the last two campaigns, scoring 32 goals and providing 14 assists in 98 outings for the Seasiders.

This came on the back of a tough number of seasons for the forward, with a three-year stint with Watford not going to plan, after making the move to Vicarage Road from Middlesbrough in 2021.

Fletcher’s rejuvenation with Blackpool made him a prized asset this summer as he approached the conclusion of his deal with the Fylde Coast outfit.

The Gazette understands despite the Seasiders’ best attempts to agree fresh terms with the forward, he was unable to turn down an ‘unbelievable’ offer presented by the Terriers, with the Manchester United academy product penning a two-year deal, which includes a 12 month option, at the Accu Stadium.

Ahead of the news being announced, Fletcher took to social media to bid farewell to Bloomfield Road.

“Firstly it has been a huge privilege to represent this football club over the last two years,” he wrote.

“Since arriving in 2024, I’ve shared the dressing room with incredible teammates, played under fantastic managers and staff, and also met amazing people within the community of the town.

“Myself and the club couldn’t come to an agreement for me to extend, which happens in football, but I leave with great memories to reflect back on and wish everyone nothing but the best.

“Finally, a massive thank you goes to you, the fans, the heart beat of the football club. Voting me fans player of the season two years in a row is something I’m extremely proud of and will never forget.

“I look forward to coming back to Bloomfield Road this season.”
