A local referee deemed the pitch unplayable after inspecting the Bloomfield Road surface earlier today.

It is Blackpool's second home game in five days to be postponed due to a frozen pitch.

"Following an early inspection this afternoon, prior to the visitors making the trip north, a local referee has deemed particular areas of the surface unplayable," Blackpool said in a statement.

"The pitch at Bloomfield Road has been covered since Tuesday evening, with ground staff working tirelessly against the conditions and utilising blow heaters.

"However, in light of the temperatures forecast overnight, the match has been called off on the basis that it will still be unplayable come kick-off time tomorrow.

"A new date for the game will be announced in due course."

The postponement comes after Tuesday night's home game against Burton Albion was called off.

The decision was taken by referee Christopher Sarginson barely 10 minutes before kick-off after Burton players had shared concerns about a small area of the surface.

It is the second time this fixture has been postponed after the Brewers informed the EFL they were unable to fulfil the original date, on January 30, due to a Covid-19 outbreak.

This is the sixth Blackpool game to have been called off this season, with fixtures against Rochdale, Sunderland and Northampton Town also falling victim.

The Seasiders have played just 24 games so far this term, five fewer than at this point last season.

They have another 22 fixtures to fulfil between now and May 8, with the number of free midweeks rapidly running out.
