The message, which has been reported to police, was sent shortly after Tuesday night's game between the two sides was postponed.

The decision was taken by referee Christopher Sarginson barely 10 minutes before kick-off after Burton players had shared concerns about a small area of the surface.

It is the second time this fixture has been postponed after the Brewers informed the EFL they were unable to fulfil the original date, on January 30, due to a Covid-19 outbreak.

The two clubs and the EFL have now come together to release a joint statement condemning the offensive tweet.

It comes in the wake of an open letter issued by the EFL to social media companies, calling on them to clamp down on online abuse.

The statement reads: "Burton Albion and Blackpool FC welcomes football’s open letter issued to social media companies, and signed by the EFL, calling for decisive action to be taken against all forms of online abuse and discrimination on their platforms.

"Earlier this week, following the postponement of our Sky Bet League One fixture at Bloomfield Road, an individual directed a malicious and offensive post to Burton Albion’s Twitter account that has since been reported to the Police and the organisation itself.

"Both clubs strongly condemn the contents of the message and adopt a zero-tolerance policy where this is concerned.

"Not Today or Any Day."
