The 26-year-old links up with former Seasider Mickey Mellon, who is now in charge of the SPL outfit.

Mellon previously tried to sign Edwards for Tranmere Rovers following his release by Plymouth Argyle last summer.

"As soon as I spoke to the gaffer I knew I wanted to come up to the Scottish Premiership and I'm finally glad to part of Dundee United's rebuild in the Premiership," Edwards said

"I don't like to say I'm this or that, the fans will hopefully make that call themselves.

"I like everything and as footballer's we need to do all sides of the game."

The centre back had previously been a target for Bolton Wanderers and held talks with Ian Evatt’s men on more than one occasion.

Edwards, who played with Evatt at Chesterfield, made 27 appearances for the Seasiders last season in what was his first campaign with the club.

A Terry McPhillips signing last summer, the 6ft 5ins centre back was a regular during the first half of the season but he found himself out of Pool’s starting XI from January onwards following the arrival of Taylor Moore during the January transfer window.

The Bristol City loanee often partnered Ben Heneghan in the centre of defence or alongside James Husband as part of a back three.

The 26-year-old scored one goal during his time at Bloomfield Road, which came in the 2-1 win against Oxford United in August.

Salford City had previously been mentioned as a potential destination for Edwards earlier this summer.

Dundee United drew 1-1 with St Johnstone on Saturday in Mellon’s first league game in charge.

They face Motherwell next weekend.

"I'm delighted to finally get Ryan in the door," Mellon said.

"We need a strong squad and I believe we need that type of player that Ryan is.

"He will come in and add to what we already have so pleased to have him on board."
